Mictecacihuatl is the Aztec "Lady of the Dead" and Queen of Mictlan (the underworld), presiding over the afterlife and presiding over the ancient festival that evolved into modern Día de Muertos. Alongside her husband, Miclantecuhtli, she guards the bones of the deceased, which are viewed as a source of new life.
