The axolotl, or Mexican salamander, has been an important symbol in Mexican culture for centuries. The Aztecs called theaxolotl ASH-OH-LOH-TUHL, which comes from the Nahuatl words atl ("water") and xolotl ("monster"). The axolotl is named after the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, who is said to have disguised himself as an axolotl to avoid being sacrificed.
